First of its kind survey focuses on part-time/
contract faculty
A new, province-wide study is asking non full-time/contract faculty in Ontario’s
colleges and universities about their working experience.

LONDON, ON March 31, 2015 It’s estimated that more than half of faculty in Ontario’s
colleges and universities are non fulltime or contract and have different working experiences
from their fulltime counterparts.
Before now, no organization has reached out to this group on a large scale in order to better
understand this key group in Ontario’s higher education sector. A new survey conducted by
Academica Group on behalf of the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO), is
asking the questions and will be getting answers. With anonymous responses, the study will
paint a realistic picture with a crosssection of workers and institutions.
The results will give insight into the higher education sector, and the working conditions and
experiences of non fulltime and contract faculty. The goal is to help improve higher ed for
everyone.
“HEQCO has already undertaken several studies on postsecondary teaching, among them
recent reports on faculty workload, and nonfulltime instructors,” says Richard Wiggers,
HEQCO’s executive director of research and programs. “This new study explores another
important aspect of postsecondary teaching. We need to have a better understanding of who
is doing the teaching and under what circumstances at Ontario’s colleges and universities.”
HEQCO is an independent agency that conducts evidencebased research and provides
objective advice to government. Ultimately, they strive to support research that will impact
discussion of Ontario’s policy priorities.
