February 2, 2021

Tonight, London City Council celebrated the 2020 recipients of the Diversity, Race Relations, and Inclusivity Award (DRRIA), recognizing each group’s unique contribution in promoting public awareness of diversity, anti-racism, inclusivity and human rights in London:

Immploy

Category: Social/Community Services (including Not-for-Profits) (49 or fewer employees/members)

As a regional champion and immigrant employment council, Immploy is an invaluable knowledge-sharing network of business leaders who have experienced the benefits of hiring globally. Led by executive leaders from industries in London and supported by an Advisory Committee of community partners, Immploy bridges the gap between labour market demand and supply. Their two main programs – Job Match, which screens and recruits potential candidates for employers, and Mentorship, which connects volunteer mentors with job-ready newcomers - ensure that companies and organizations are aware of, and connected to, the newcomer talent in our community.

Guru Nanak Mission Society

Category: Youth/Young Adult Groups or Organizations (<26 years of age)

Guru Nanak Mission Society is a completely volunteer-based and non-profit organization. Members of this organization include Sikh families and students, who can regularly be seen out in our community distributing meals and groceries to people and organizations in need. Twice a year, the Guru Nanak Mission Society hosts a blood donation drive and every year in the month of November can be seen distributing free pizza in downtown London to anyone who would like a slice. Their goal is to bring awareness to younger generations about selfless service, volunteering more and giving back to the community.

Melanated View (Open Tabs)

Category: Small Business/Labour (49 or fewer employees/members)

Melanated View is a locally produced TV talk show that focuses on opening the dialogue about various topics related to being Black in Canada as well as issues surrounding racism, stereotypes, and image. Airing on Rogers TV London, Season One featured five Black Canadians engaging in conversation with the community through the show and social media platforms. Individuals share their stories, ask questions and learn from each other to build bridges and contribute to unifying the London community and beyond.  Melanated View has filmed one season and a second season is anticipated with the intent of opening up the show to a wider audience.

Nominations for these annual awards were accepted in the fall of 2020 and then reviewed by the Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee.  Recommendations were then made to Council for consideration.

“City Council is pleased to recognize outstanding efforts to promote diversity, race relations, inclusivity and human rights in our city,” said Mayor Ed Holder. “We are grateful for those who have made it their priority to engage in initiatives showcasing how welcoming London truly is.”

The DRRIA Awards began in 2000. Visit www.london.ca/DRRIAward for details on the nomination process.
