“Olivia!”

Pre-health and science program 毕业后,得到了practical nursing program的录取。

My Fanshawe Experience

Fangzhou Dong (Practical Nursing program)

On August 26th, 2011 I left China and came to Canada. I was greeted by my homestay ‘father’ at the London Airport. It was hard to process the fact that I was in Canada, a country in which people all speak English, even though my grades for English were very poor. At the time, I was filled with fear and felt unable to face the path I had to take.

I graduated from Fanshawe College’s Practical Nursing program. I chose to come to Canada for international studies because it was the safest place out of English-speaking countries and was a developed country with high education standards. After reviewing over a large amount of literature on and comparing between various schools, I found that Fanshawe was a large-sized post-secondary school with a low student-to-faculty ratio and good language environment. After I decided to go to Fanshawe, I decided to live with a homestay family, a choice that has been made by many other international students. The homestay experience helped me accustom to life in Canada because I had never been apart from my parents before. Homestay gave me warmth and also presented a solution to the problem of my cooking inability. It also gave me an environment in which I was immersed in English.

Because I did not take my IELTS exam, I was required to study level four ESL for a semester. The professors and my classmates were very friendly and the curriculum was not difficult, so I was able to familiarize myself quickly. At the end of the four months, I had to choose a major. Prior to leaving China, I studied accounting but I knew I did not like this area of study. After some discussion with the teachers at the International Office, I decided to follow their advice and study practical nursing, which better suited my personality and skills. Many people told me that nursing as difficult to study and I was worried because I had no foundational knowledge about medical expertise and terminology. However, to think about the issue in another way, every area of work uses its own jargon; there is no easy path to graduation, everything is determined by how hard the student works to learn everything, so there is no need to feel defeated by fear. The nursing program is very hands-on, and the profession is stable and high-paying because it is easy to find a job given the need for nurses in Canada.

After graduating from the Pre-health and Science program, I was admitted into the Practical Nursing program. One of the most difficult courses had a ton of complicated quizzes, assignments, essay, and presentations. Nursing requires collaboration, so there were many group assignments, which was a good opportunity to practice my English. I also set up a study group with my classmates to study after classes, which helped me in my studies. As well, the advantage of this major was that the school assigned a placement so there were one to two days that were set aside for practical application of what we learned, either at a hospital or retirement home. Professors would assign us to help a nurse attend to patients. At the beginning, I felt it was hectic and difficult to care for two patients simultaneously. Therefore, critical thinking and time management are important in the practice of nursing. I was also nervous that I would be unable to communicate with the patients and that I would make a mistake and irritate the nurse. I have also experienced prejudice as an international student in my interactions and it is something that other students should be prepared for. However, I have no regrets choosing this major because in most of my interactions with patients, I feel their genuine gratitude, encouragement and praise. As a person who is living abroad, this feeling brings me warmth and makes me proud of my profession.

There is a saying that international studies are not a special medicine but a lifetime of supplements. In the four years that I have been abroad, I have grown a lot. Although I have faced numerous difficulties, these difficulties have shaped my path in life for the better. International studies are difficult but I have no regrets and am thankful for everything I have received.
